The camera is unreachable, or refuses the connection

Last updated:

Two different silences

Connection refused means a device at that address is alive and answered the knock with “nothing here”. The camera is on and on the network, but not on that port. ONVIF is usually on port 80, sometimes 8000, 8080 or 8899; the camera’s web page or its maker’s app says which. Type the address with the right port.

Host unreachable means nothing answered at all — no device, or no route to it. Either the address is wrong, the camera is off, or the phone is on a network that cannot reach that one. ViewTile also checks whether the phone has an address on the camera’s network; when it does not, the message says so, and the fix is the Wi-Fi, not the camera.

A camera that moved

Cameras get a new address from the router from time to time. When a saved camera stops answering, ViewTile tries the other addresses that camera advertised when it was found, and when one of them answers, the camera is moved there. If none does, give the camera a fixed address on the router, or find it again with a scan and re-add it.

On iOS

The first time, iOS asks whether ViewTile may use the local network. If that was declined, every camera is unreachable, silently. Settings › Privacy & Security › Local Network › ViewTile turns it back on.
